Finishing Touches

The finish line is almost here at 100 Yorktown.  The home building blog was put on the back burner as we spent the last couple of months finding light fixtures, selling a house and taking on more work responsibilities.  Carpet installation was started today and will be completed tomorrow.

Latest photos are posted below and have a peering in the windows look as I took them after they put the finish coat on the floors and they were still wet.

The Hardwood Floors

August 24 and 25, 2011 - A major milestone happened with the installation of our hardwood floors over the last two days.  Finishing still needs to occur, but the floors are now down and a long list of remaining chain of events will start.

The Back Porch Continued

Thursday, August 25, 2011 - Progress continued to be made on the back porch at 100 Yorktown.  Posts were added around the deck.  We have our step into back yard.  The columns for the porch screening are also in place.  Railing and post caps have been picked out.

No Green Gables @ Yorktown

August 22-23, 2011 - Dave, Dallas and crew continued to work on getting hardie plank in the gables. We had to make a decision on paint color over the weekend, so that James Barber could start painting it this week. Again a tough decision, but with this one we at least knew it can always be painted over. From the day we picked the kendall tudor brick we wanted to use a tan/khaki color. We tried Sherwin Williams macadamia on a test board and decided to go one shade darker and settled on Sherwin Williams Basket Beige. The trim boards are the custom white we have used on all trim boards to match Kraftmaid's dove white.

As the exterior comes together, two thumbs up to Owen Lilly for the top notch he did on framing.  All the roof pitches look great and provide a lot of character to the house.

We have air!

August 23, 2011 - The HVAC system at Yorktown was completed today and brought online.  This is bittersweet as I toyed and toiled with installing a geothermal system at Yorktown.  In the end, the return on investment for the much more expensive system was too long for me to stomach the added cost.  I also didn't like being tied to one fuel source.  So instead, we have opted to do a high efficiency heat pump/gas furnace hybrid system.  We had a great experience with the install from Appalachian Heating and Cooling.   Now this will control the climate of the interior at Yorktown, so that the wood floors can be installed.

The Deck: Where's the Party?

August 23, 2011 - The previously framed deck really started taking shape today. Timbertech Reliaboard composite decking was started. The color is cedar and we LOVE it. It really looks great with the brick. The composite decking was literally a last minute upgrade.
Some other surprises are still to come out back. These are easy decisions as much as we like to entertain and spend time on our existing screened porch. I am excited to have natural gas plumbed out to the deck. The Weber will have to be upgraded to a natural gas model, but soon there will be no worries about being out of gas with company coming.

We still have to pick out our railing system. The rail will be white. We just need to decided between vinyl or composite material.
